The Automation Gap 2026: Why Some Companies Are Scaling and Others Are Drowning

The Automation Gap is getting wider and most companies don’t even realise they’re on the wrong side of it.

Over the last 18 months, I’ve watched two types of organisations emerge:

1.  The ones drowning

They have:

  • AI pilots stuck in endless “testing phases”

  • Manual processes stitched together with spreadsheets

  • Cyber teams overwhelmed by alert fatigue

  • Leaders who say “we’re exploring AI” but have no roadmap

  • Automation projects blocked by legacy approvals

They’re not slow because they lack tools. They’re slow because they lack automation

maturity.

2.    The ones scaling fast

They’re using AI + automation to:

  • Remove repetitive tasks

  • Accelerate decision‑making

  • Strengthen cybersecurity posture

  • Reduce operational drag

  • Free teams to focus on high‑value work

These companies aren’t “experimenting” with AI. They’re operationalising it.

The industry fact is:

Two companies can have the same budget, same tools, and same talent, and still get completely different outcomes.

The difference?

Automation isn’t a technology problem; It’s a leadership problem.

The companies scaling are the ones where leaders:

  • Treat automation as a strategic pillar, not an IT project

  • Invest in AI literacy across the entire organisation

  • Build cross‑functional automation squads

  • Measure automation ROI like any other business metric

  • Understand that cybersecurity and automation must evolve together

And here’s the data point everyone should pay attention to:

According to Office for National Statistics shows that 35% of UK businesses with 10 or more employees use at least one AI technology. However, genuine AI maturity remains low, with only 10% of those adopting firms utilizing AI extensively across their operations.

The real reality behind all of this:

Most teams aren’t drowning because of workload; they’re drowning because the work hasn’t changed.

And AI won’t fix that. Leadership will.

The Automation Gap is now a competitive gap.

If your organisation isn’t moving fast, it’s not because AI isn’t ready. It’s because your operating model isn’t.

And in 2026, the companies that close this gap will dominate their industries.

If you’re leading a team right now, ask yourself: Are we scaling? Or are we drowning?

The answer will define your next 24 months.

What’s your experience?

Are you seeing the Automation Gap in your industry? Drop your thoughts, we’d love to hear real‑world stories from your side.
